General information

The Faculty of Chemistry is one of the oldest faculties of Warsaw University of Technology. It was founded in 1898 as one of the three faculties of the Russian Polytechnic Institute. It was a continuation of the traditions of the Preparative School to the Polytechnic Institute operating during 1826-1830. Many worldwide renown scientists worked in the Faculty of Chemistry: Professors Józef Zawadzki, Jan Zawidzki, Kazimierz Smoleński, Ignacy Mościcki, Tadeusz Miłobędzki, Wojciech Świętosławski, Stanisław Bretsznajder, Tadeusz Urbański, Tadeusz Wojno and many others. The commendable traditions of the Faculty of Chemistry were and are cultivated by succeeding generations of students and academic staff.

Scientific profile

At present, the Faculty of Chemistry of Warsaw University of Technology is one of the three best chemical faculties at Polish universities of Technologies. The Faculty educates students and conducts scientific research in highly-specialised scientific fields such as:

  • chemical technology and catalysis,
  • polymer technology and processing,
  • biotechnology,
  • technology of explosives,
  • technology of semi-conducting materials and materials of special properties (magnetic materials, high-temperature superconductors, synthetic metals, conducting polymers, applied and functional ceramics),
  • technology of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics,
  • analytical chemistry and material characterization.

Educational facilities

The Faculty of Chemistry of Warsaw University of Technology is located on the main campus in two buildings:

  • Chemistry Building, ul. Noakowskiego 3,
  • Chemical Technology Building, ul. Koszykowa 75.

The Faculty has at its disposal many didactic facilities, among others the Prof. Józef Zawadzki Auditorium (the oldest and largest traditional auditorium at Warsaw University of Technology). It also has other auditoria and lecture rooms as well as foreign language laboratories, A specific feature of our Faculty are student laboratories in which practical experiments are conducted within the basic courses: inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, chemical technology as well as specialist and diploma laboratories.

The Faculty has a scientific library located in the Chemistry Building. This library is the largest branch of the Warsaw University of Technology Main Library and has a considerable collection of international journals, books and encyclopedias. It is open to all interested persons.

At the Faculty there are three computer laboratories available for students. They are equipped with ca. 60 personal computers. The computers have access to the Internewt and are linked with the Warsaw University of Technology Main Information Center.

Cooperation with foreign higher education institutions

The Faculty of Chemistry of Warsaw University of Technology participates in many international didactic and scientific programs. Their purpose is to improve the level of education and to adapt it to the curriculum valid in the European Union. Educational cooperation with European Universities within the Tempus program should be especially noted. From its funds audio-visual equipment for lecture rooms as well as scientific apparatuses for student laboratories have been purchased. Within the Tempus and Erasmus programs, we conduct lectures given in the English language. They are offered as elective courses, including for doctoral students.

Academic staff

The academic staff of the Faculty of Chemistry of Warsaw University of Technology consists of 63 professors (including 35 tenured professors), 72 readers and senior readers, 8 senior lecturers and 13 lecturers.

Curriculum - type of studies

At the Faculty of Chemistry intramural studies are conducted in two fields of studies:

  • Chemical Technology (Master and Bachelor Degree courses),
  • Biotechnology (Master Degree course conducted together with the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering and Faculty of Environmental Engineering).

In addition to the above mentioned studies, we conduct Doctoral studies within the chemical technology and pure chemistry fields.
